Q: Sewing CT Patterns for a Friend, Not as a Business
I don't want to purchase a cottage license or sew Chloe Toes patterns as a business. However, I have a friend/relative who wants me to make them a set of diapers. My friend/relative wants to pay me for sewing for her. Can I do this without having to buy a cottage license?

A: It is illegal for you to sew products for money using our patterns, even if you are only doing it on a small scale. However, there is a simple solution for this type of situation which will not require you to pay for a full cottage license. Simply have your friend/relative purchase their own copy of the pattern. Then you may legally sew for them using the pattern and have them pay you for your sewing services. When you complete the projects for the purchaser, you return both the pattern and your sewing projects to them. In this way, you are contracting your sewing services but not violating the copyright for the patterns, since the person owns their own pattern and is paying you only for your sewing services.

    Q: Copying Patterns and Instructions
Can I trace or photocopy my patterns to share with friends? What about for my own use?

A: Chloe Toes Patterns are copyrighted, therefore it is illegal to copy them for distribution to others, whether for sale or free of charge. Each user must purchase his/her own copy of the pattern to use.

You may, however, trace or copy part or all of the pattern and instructions for your own use. In fact, since these are multisize patterns, we consider it necessary to trace off copies of your pattern in order to be able to utilize all of the different sizes as your child grows. See our FAQ on pattern tracing for more advice on tracing the different sizes.

    Q: Selling Used Diapers
I don't have a cottage license and don't want to produce diapers for profit, but my child has outgrown his diapers and I would like to resell them. Is it OK for me to resell my Chloe Toes diapers (or shoes) once I am finished with them?

A: Yes, it is perfectly legal for you to resell used products once you have finished with them. Since the intent was to sew for private use rather than to create items for sale and profit, it is within your rights to resell the items after you have used them. You may also resell your patterns when you are done using them. You may not, however, keep copies of the patterns to continue using after reselling the pattern.

Q: Sewing Chloe Toes Diapers and/or Shoes for Sale
I would like to make Chloe Toes Diapers and shoes to sell in my store (or online, Ebay, etc). May I do this?

A: Chloe Toes patterns are copyrighted and may not be used to sew items for profit unless you first purchase a cottage license to do so. Cottage licenses are available for purchase, pending submission and approval of sample products for quality assurance. Please email us for details. We will soon be posting complete information on cottage licensing on our website. The cottage license for diapers (includes the diaper cover) is $150/year and the cottage license for shoes is $100/year. Applicants must purchase a pattern and familiarize themselves with the pattern and construction, then submit samples of each product they intend to sell (samples will be returned to you). Once we are able to approve that the products meet our quality standards, the applicant will be offered the opportunity to purchase a license.

    Q: Elastic not gathering enough?
My foldover elastic doesn't seem to be gathering tight enough. Am I doing something wrong? How can I fix this?

A: The most frequent problem we hear about from home sew-ers making Chloe Toes diapers is that they have difficulty getting the fold-over elastic (foe) gathered snug enough. The amount of gathering will depend on several factors. Please read the following advice to correct these factors.

The first factor is the type of foe. There are many excellent sources online where you may purchase high quality foe. Unfortunately, we have rarely been able to locate it in brick and mortar fabric stores. Therefore we suggest you purchase from a reliable diaper supply store or coop. We carry high quality foe here in our store in several colors. We recommend only the 1" wide foe and suggest using matte finish, rather than shiny satin finish foe. Even good quality foe will vary depending on the source. Our store carries foe from at least two different sources and we have noticed slight differences, even between products from the same source. Therefore, keep in mind that you may need to adjust how tight you pull the foe when sewing. We advise you to always prewash and preshrink your foe.

The second factor which affects stretch is the bulk of the diaper fabric you are binding. When making a pocket diaper from 1mil poly knit pul and lightweight inner fabric, you will need to pull the foe less to gather than when making an AIO dipaer with several layers of hemp and a 2mil cotton woven pul outer layer. The latter diaper will require you to stretch the foe to the max.

The third factor affecting stretch and recovery of the foe is sewing technique. Please review the sewing tutorials on our site. Then pay particular attention to several aspects of your sewing technique. You will want to use a very long and wide zig-zag stitch or triple zig-zag stitch, since every time the needle pierces the foe, this decreases the elasticity and recovery of the foe. You will also want to use both hands to pull the foe snug from both front and back of the presser foot as you sew. Do not force the fabric through, allow the feed dogs to do the work. But keep the foe pulled taut as you do. Finally, every time you stop sewing, be certain the needle is down in the fabric. If the needle position is up and you relax tension on the foe, the foe will relax and you will lose some of the gather.

We hope these tips will help you to achieve a perfect fit with the right amount of gathering in your diapers. Note that the first time you wash and dry your diapers after sewing, the elastic will recover some and will snug up to fit more closely.

    Q: Special Sewing Machine Needed?
Do I need a special sewing machine or other special equipment to sew Chloe Toes leather shoes?

A: No. No special machine or equipment are needed. You can sew leather shoes on your regular sewing machine. All you need is a leather needle (available at most sewing stores), ordinary polyester thread, scissors or rotary cutter, a washable glue stick, paperclips (to hold pieces instead of pins) and an ordinary ballpoint pen.

    Q: Turned and Topstitched Diapers?
I like to sew my diapers by the turned and topstitched method instead of using FOE. Can I make Chloe Toes diapers this way?

A: Yes. You can do turned and topstitched construction, although we confess we don't know why anyone would want to. We at Chloe Toes think that the FOE assembly is so much quicker and more efficent than turning and topstitching, we encourage you to try it. Practice a bit and see how well it works. However, if you still want to make T&T diapers, just add a seam allowance around the outer edge of the diaper pattern and proceed to construct the diapers in your usual T&T style. Costumers who have tried this style tell us that it works very well.

    Q: Snap Setting Service?
I don't have a snap press, but I want my diapers to have professional resin snap closures. Do you offer snap setting service?

A: Yes. We offer snap setting service. We are also collecting a list of other people who offer this service. If you would like snaps set for you, you must carefully mark the exact placement of your snap studs and sockets and mail the finished diapers to us, along with your choice of snap colors (please email first to see which colors we have in stock). We will set the snaps for a fee of $2/diaper (snaps included) and mail them back to you. Obviously, since the snaps must be applied to the completed, sewn diaper, we are unable to do "hidden" snaps for you. Customers are responsible for all shipping costs. If you are interested in snap service, please email us.

Q: No Snap Press, Will Other Snaps Work?
I don't have a professional snap press, but would like to use snaps. Is there another option?

A: Yes. You do not need a professional press. Many of our customers have successfully used the snap setters from The Snap Source. These snap setters are less expensive and give very professional-looking results. They are a metal snap with colorful caps and are set with a small snap-setting device and hammer. We have heard mixed feedback regarding various snap-setting pliers available in retail stores. Some customers have had success with them while others have been unhappy with the results. Therefore, we do not recommend the snap pliers and corresponding snaps.

Q: Hook and Loop Instead of Snaps?
I don't have a snap press. I prefer hook and loop tape closures. Can I substitute hook and loop for snaps?

A: Yes, you may make Chloe Toes diapers with hook and loop tape instead of snaps. Several of our customers have successfully made hook and loop diapers with our pattern. We suggest using a soft 1 1/2" wide loop on the diaper front, positioning it at an angle to match the alignment of the snap socket placement. If making an AIO style diaper (pocket or true) you will want to place a facing of waterproof material behind the stitching where you've attached the loop tape (to prevent wicking). Once you complete binding the diaper with FOE, you will sew on the hook tape to the underside of the tabs. Don't forget to add fold-back laundry tabs. We will be creating a tutorial for use of hook and loop closures sometime soon, so keep checking back with us.
